Amazingly, these new "treated" shakes can last up to twice as long as the old non-treated Cedar roofs ie: up to 50 years.  The roof fungus and bacteria that might normally degrade the cedar roof shakes over time is prevented from growing and attaching to the substrate of the shake, and that in turn inhibits degradation, and hence maintains a new looking shake/shingle for a much longer period of time, typically it can last up to a few decades longer. This is a serious benefit not to be overlooked when one plans to stay in their home for many years. Asphalt shingles will last approx. 15-20 years or more depending on conditions, and sometimes less depending on the quality of the shingle and the intensity of the elements. So initial installation is cheaper for Asphalt shingles, but repetitive installations will prove to be unsavory to the pocket book in the long run. If a home is to be sold however the Asphalt shingle conversion might be the better alternative.
